JONNY STORM WINS RED BULL EMSEE STOP IN MIAMI

–Orlando MC Wins Regional Qualifier Second Year In A Row and Heads to Atlanta to Compete Against the Best Freestyle MCs in the Country at Red Bull EmSee National Finals –

Miami – November 17, 2011 – Last night, eight of Miami’s dopest freestyle MCs headed to the 90 Degrees club in Miami to battle it out at Red Bull EmSee, a national MC battle, but only one walked away the winner.  In a night filled with piercing punch lines and witty lyrics; MCs Surgeon General, Vers, LMS, Headcrack, Dirty Dem, 4ize and Issac came prepared to knock down their competition but Jonny Storm came with the winning punches. He’ll advance to the Red Bull EmSee national finals in Atlanta next month.  Last night’s battle, was hosted by hip-hop legend, Bun B. M1 of Dead Prez, Royce Da 5’9” of Eminem’s Shady Records label and Miami’s own Wrekonize served as judges for the night and entertained the crowd with special performances in between rounds. DJ Entice kept the beats bumpin’ throughout the show.

The Red Bull EmSee competition format puts a spin on the traditional rap battle by providing random prompts and cues on screens that the MCs needed to hit in each of their flows, challenging them to truly spit rhymes off-the-dome.  Winner Jonny Storm explained tonight’s EmSee battle, “This is the best experience I’ve had in a long time, the fact that I won makes it even sweeter but overall they always treat you good in these MC competitions.”  In an interesting twist to the evening, Jonny Storm and Surgeon General had previously gone head to head in the 2010 Red Bull EmSee final round, with Jonny Storm being crowned the winner. This year’s competition was so close that the battle went into a crowd-requested overtime, which was granted by Bun B and the other judges. At the end of the 3rd and final round, Jonny Storm once again prevailed over Surgeon General. Reflecting on last night’s win, Jonny Storm shares, “I won last year and made it to the finals and it feels great to beat him again. I’m glad that it was a repeat of history for me. Surgeon did really good, better than last time. I’m proud he did as good as he did and happy that it went into overtime.  It made it real legit.”

Competing MCs must please the crowd but ultimately, the panel of judges has the final say.  Royce Da 5’9” has presided over a few Red Bull EmSee qualifiers.  When asked what it will take to get his vote, he explains, “I expect clever and witty. Miss me with your violence; I don’t care about your gangster street cred. Make me laugh. Entertain me.”

Jonny Storm is a Providence, Rhode Island native who moved to Orlando, Florida in 2000 and has been rapping for more than 13 years.  He is looking forward to the finals in Atlanta and jokes to his upcoming competition, “You all know when you see me that you’re gonna be worried.” As the competition continues to heat up, Jonny Storm discusses how he’ll prepare for the final battle, “I’m not gonna do anything special [to prepare], I’m gonna come the same way with a fresh mind, maybe go through some images at my house but really it’s just about freestyling and that is the bulk of the contest and that is what I’m gonna keep it strict to.”
